I think Seattle has to be the most beautiful city I’ve ever been to. It really was a treat to spend two days there. I ate sushi on the wharf, went to the Experience Music Project museum and then told some jokes to cap off the trip. The next morning, right after the University of Washington show, Bryan Callen and I flew to Las Vegas to do a show for an American Eagle conference. Man, that was a fun show. This show was particularly fun because eight of the American Eagle district managers and higher ups, including top dog Joe Kerin, did stand up for the show. I was quite impressed with how everyone seemed so comfortable on stage. Not a shy one in the bunch. Jason Marks was voted the winner of the evening and won a trip to Cancun, Mexico, which is where we will be holding the finals for AE’s Campus Comedy Challenge. It was my first time going to Las Vegas and I enjoyed it. Those American Eagle folks know how to have a good time.
Cheers.

So the gang and myself are now on the West Coast in the state of Washington. After starting the tour in the Midwest and dealing with all the snow out there, it feels good to see grass again. Washington really has some beautiful landscapes. Anyway, Morgan Murphy and Kevin Christy have joined the tour. They knocked it outta the park last night at Washington State University. The kids loved them. Scott Robinson was the victor for the evening. He told me he had zero experience in doing stand up but it didn’t show. His swagger was phenomonal.
I’m writing this in the van as we’re headed to Washington State’s rival, the University of Washington. I’ve never been to Seattle before. I can’t wait to check out the city. We have a day off in Seattle, so a few of us are gonna check out the Jimi Hendrix inspired Experience Music Project museum. Bryan Callen says I remind him of Jimi Hendrix when I perform. I think that’s the coolest compliment I’ve ever got. So excuse me as I kiss the sky.

Last Monday night, I was up late working on some stuff for school and I periodically take breaks to just surf the net to read blogs, check out myspace, facebook, and watch some comedy on Youtube. I also receive video podcasts from Comedy Central with clips from comedians on Premium blend and shows like that. I had just watched Jasper Redd’s clip a little earlier that day so I thought, “Hey, I wonder if Jasper has any other clips on Youtube.” So I typed in Jasper’s name and a couple clips came up. It was his Comedy Central clips that I had saw before and a promo for American Eagle. I clicked on the American Eagle promo and watched it. You would not believe how excited I was to see that a contest like this was going on. I’ve been in comedy for a little over a year and a half now and it is so hard to get people to take me seriously as young comedian in college. People usually write off college kids as being able to take the comedy profession seriously. So I immediately thought to myself, “I have to do this. Where is it being held? I’m going.”

The contests have been fun to watch. Many of the students competing are very nervous, which I can understand. Bombing in front of your entire student body is not a pleasant thought. Most of the contestants bring all their friends to the contest, which gives them a better shot of winning. However, one particular female student, Catherine, at James Madison University did very well, but only got 8 percent of the vote. Everyone backstage was shocked because she was much more comfortable on stage than the others and had some funny jokes, and it was only her second time on stage. It just goes to show, you can’t always base how funny a comic is based on what the crowd thinks. The crowds on this tour have been really cool and supportive. But in the comedy world, crowds are weird, most are cool, but some are drunk, some are haters, some are uptight and some are just plain dumb.

So Kent State concluded the first leg of AECCC tour. Everybody gets a little break now. Well, except for me. I’ll be flying to London, England to tape BBC’s World Stands Up. I’ve never been to London, so I’m excited about going to perform there. As soon as I get back from England, I head straight to Washington State to resume the tour with the gang. I can only hope the start of the second leg will be as fun as the first leg. And before I sign off, congrats to CJ Toledano, who drove four hours in the snow from Erie, PA to make it to Kent State in time for the show and advance to the next round. That had to be a good feeling. Until next time…. Oh yeah, has anyone seen my passport?
Right now I’m in our tour van heading to Kent State. We’re driving through a freakin’ snowstorm. The roads are slushy and traffic is slow, but the show will go on if I have anything to do with it. The gang and myself are keeping ourselves occupied with snacks and video games. Sheng was supposed to head home after last night’s show, but things got a little crazy with flights and all so he’s staying with us one more day…

The show at James Madison cracked me up. Each of the contestants had a posse of screaming fans to cheer them on. We finally had our first funny lady of the tour. It’s been all dudes so far and I don’t know what’s up with that! Anyway, this little lady, Catherine, only got 8% of the vote that night. But I say it’s worth checking out her act, so I asked the tour folks to put it up on the site. They said “sure”, so look for Catherine and some of the other folks who didn’t make it on a “Best of the Rest” section of this site in the next few days…. More tomorrow - Jasper
The show at Marquette was an old fashioned good time. All the comedians had great sets. The crowd was rowdy but yet attentive and really gave it up. Mike Bolz emerged as the victor for the evening with fifty one percent of the votes. He really did well. So that’s two shows in the can and so far there has yet to be a female student comic. Hopefully that changes. I have a real funny aunt who would have been perfect for this. Too bad she’s not elligible. I love you Aunt Felicia. James Madison you’re next.

Whazzup?! Wassa Huzzard in da Gruzzard? I don’t know what that means at all, but ok. So Friday was the kickoff of the American Eagle Campus Comedy Challenge and after much adversity I made it to the University of Minnesota. And I mean adversity. It involved traffic riddled cab rides, getting to the airport 30 minutes before departure, running through security after being “randomly selected” and, of course, waiting an hour and 10 minutes for my luggage. OH JOY OF JOYS. Nothing beats wondering if your luggage actually made it with you! Seriously, it feels like someone gave me an IV drip of cotton candy and hope.

So last night Joey Olson was chosen to represent the University of Minnesota in American Eagle’s Campus Comedy Challenge. It was a fun show. All the kids who came out gave great energy and support for all the student comics. For their first time on stage in front of a big crowd, the student comics had alotta poise. I remember my first time on stage. I was so nervous I couldn’t lift my head up to look at the crowd. I stared at the floor the whole time. So kudos to all the student comics who walked on stage, looked the audience dead in the face and took their laughs like a pro.
We’re on our way to Milwaukee…
